| ACAA | Australia China Alumni Association (Deakin University is a gold level member) |
| academic regalia | Gown worn by graduands and academics at graduation ceremonies and other formal occasions. Also known as 'Academic Dress'. |
| academic transcript | A chronological record of a student's enrolment and official assessment results in units and courses |
| Academic Board | The principal academic authority within the University, with responsibility for maintaining standards in teaching and research training |
| academic year | The period from the first day of the first trimester of any year to the day preceding the first day of the first trimester of the following year, inclusive of both. |
| acode | Australasian Council on Open, Distance and E-learning |
| advanced standing | A collective term including both credit transfer and credit for prior learning. It means credit granted towards a course at the University for relevant approved study, experience or work satisfactorily completed at the University or elsewhere |

| alternative unit | A unit which a student undertakes in place of another unit from which the student is precluded on the basis of existing knowledge or skills |

| Alumni | Graduates of a university are Alumni (plural) but a graduate is an Alumnus (singular). |

| APC | Academic Progress Committee (subcommittee of Faculty Academic Progress and Discipline Committee) |

| articulation | The mechanism that enables students to proceed from one course to another sometimes, but not necessarily, with credit |
